How to choose the best blind for your window?

When choosing any window covering, but especially blinds, there are three questions you should consider. By thinking through the answers to these questions you can make informed decisions about which blind type would work best for you, rather than just putting up what you had before.

Question 1 - How do you use the room, most of the time?

Be honest! It’s all very well imagining the suave sophisticated dinner guests sitting by candlelight in the dining room, against the back drop of the luxurious jacquard roman blinds. But if actually you have twin toddlers who love nothing more than throwing food – maybe a wipeable roller is the best solution.

How often do you actually sit watching the view of the garden through the beautiful south facing picture bay window when actually it dazzles you all through the summer and is a black mirror on winter evenings? Does your study or home office have to double up as the guest bedroom? Each window has its own character and influences each room, it is important that we get the blind right for the way you use the room.

Question 2 - What do you want to achieve with your window coverings?

Do you want privacy? Do you want to see the television on summer evenings? Do you want to block out streetlights and light evenings so your child will sleep? Are you looking for the statement piece for the minimalist room you’ve just done up? Does it need to be wipeable? Is that window a dust trap? Do you just want to replace your traditional curtains with modern blinds? All these things will affect the type of blind that we would recommend for your room.

Question 3 - Does the light in the room change through the year? Through the day?

This determines how flexible the window shading needs to be.  Do you need lots of light because your window is in the shade for most of the day, but privacy at night so the neighbours can’t see in? Do you need to keep the sun off your computer screen without blocking out all the natural light? Does the sun chase you around the room whilst you’re trying to relax with a good book? Do you need to block out the sun in the spring and autumn when it’s low in the sky? It’s no good fitting a roller blind which blocks out all the light if you want some natural light without being blinded by the sun.
